Train for the oil sands. Start safe.
The core safety courses you need to work safely on an Alberta oil sands site, in one place. Start training and be ready for your first day of work.
Courses for everyone on site
For every oil sands worker: field workers, foremen, general foremen, superintendents, managers and anyone who does or supervises hands-on work. Take these before you start work in the oil sands.
Alberta Oil Sands Site Orientations
Most oil sands sites run their own orientation before your first shift. Find each site on our map of northern Alberta and go straight to the operator’s orientation page.
WHMIS — General Education
Every worker who uses or works near hazardous products must have WHMIS training. Learn to read the labels, pictograms and safety data sheets you will see on every site.
OHS Regulatory Awareness — Western Canada
(Alberta, BC, Manitoba & Saskatchewan)
Every worker and employer has legal OHS duties. Learn your rights and duties in plain language, plus the key differences between provinces. One course for work anywhere in Western Canada.
H2S Awareness — Hydrogen Sulphide Safety
H2S exposure is a risk in oil sands facilities, tanks and tailings areas. Learn how to recognize it, respond to your gas monitor and get to safety.
Nuclear Gauges Safety — Radiation Awareness
For working in plant areas. Oil sands plants use nuclear gauges on vessels and piping, and assessment and testing equipment may also have nuclear sources. Learn the warning signs, safe distances and what must happen before anyone works near one.
Common Safety Orientation
Energy Safety Canada’s standard online orientation for workers new to the energy industry. Gardril does not offer this course.
Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention
Alberta OHS Code section 211.1 requires this training for workers who may be exposed to musculoskeletal injury, which includes most hands-on workers in the oil sands.
Bear & Wildlife Awareness
For workers in mines, tailings and wilderness edge areas. Oil sands sites sit in the boreal forest, where workers can meet bears, wolves, moose and other animals. Learn how to avoid an encounter and what to do if one happens.
Courses specific to tasks
For workers who do this hands-on work, and for the foremen, general foremen, supervisors and managers who oversee it, so they understand the hazards and the controls. The more task-specific courses you complete, the more jobs you can be placed on.
Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) - Road
For anyone who handles, offers for transport or transports dangerous goods by road. Learn the classes, placards and shipping documents.
Confined Space Awareness
Tanks, vessels and sumps can hold toxic or oxygen-poor air that kills in minutes. Online theory. Your employer completes the practical.
Fall Protection Awareness
A fall from even a few metres can be fatal. Learn when fall protection is needed and how each system works. Online theory. Your employer completes the practical.
Ground Disturbance
Hitting a buried pipeline or cable can kill. Learn how buried facilities are located and how digging is controlled on site.
Forklift Safety
Forklifts cause serious crush and struck-by injuries. Learn safe operation around loads, people and ramps. Online theory. Your employer completes the practical.
Human and Organizational Performance
Why people make mistakes, and how good defences catch them before someone gets hurt. Learn how to speak up about risk on your crew.
H2S Alive
Only if your job requires it. Delivered by Energy Safety Canada and its approved training providers. Gardril does not offer this course.
Basic First Aid and CPR
Many sites require trained first aiders on every crew. A one day, Red Cross certified classroom course from Energy Safety Canada. Gardril does not offer this course.
