Common WHMIS questions — answered plainly

Is WHMIS training required in Canada?

Yes. Under the Hazardous Products Regulations and provincial OHS law, workers who work with or near hazardous products must be trained. This course provides the general WHMIS education; your employer adds workplace-specific training.

How long does the WHMIS course take?

The Hazardous Products Act/Regulation does not prescribe a specific time requirement for WHMIS training. Gardril is assessment-first: you prove what you already know and train only on your gaps — most learners finish in under an hour.

Does WHMIS certification expire?

WHMIS has no fixed legal expiry, but employers must keep workers’ knowledge current, and many set annual or site-specific refreshers. Your certificate records the date you were verified and certified.

Will employers accept an online WHMIS certificate?

Yes — and here’s why this one is different: your certificate is tied to you through a government-ID scan and live facial match, proof generic online certificates can’t offer. It’s built to ANSI/ASSP Z490.1-2024, which requires that the verified learner, “not others or technological aids,” completes the assessment — the training standard OHS regulators increasingly reference when assessing what is reasonably practicable.
